Flutes
Flutes are the vertical grooves or channels that are carved into the surface of a column, mast, or other cylindrical object. In maritime context, flutes are commonly found on the masts of sailing ships. The purpose of flutes on a mast is to provide additional strength and rigidity to the mast, while also reducing its weight. Flutes also allow for the attachment of various rigging components, such as shrouds and stays, which help to support the mast and distribute the loads imposed by the sails. Flutes can vary in number, size, and spacing depending on the size and type of the vessel, as well as the intended use of the mast.
