Forced Labor
Forced labor refers to any work or services that people are forced to do against their will, under threat of punishment. In the maritime context, forced labor can occur in the fishing industry, where workers may be forced to work long hours in dangerous conditions for little or no pay. This can include physical abuse, withholding of wages, and restrictions on freedom of movement. Forced labor can also occur in the shipping industry, where seafarers may be forced to work long hours without adequate rest or food, and may be subjected to physical or verbal abuse. Forced labor is a serious violation of human rights and is illegal under international law.
