Gripe

Gripe is a term used to describe a sudden and sharp pain in the stomach or bowels of a ship. It is caused by the ship rolling or pitching heavily in rough seas, which can cause the cargo and equipment on board to shift and move around. This movement can put stress on the ship's structure, causing it to flex and twist, which in turn can cause the planks and timbers to rub against each other and create a creaking or groaning sound. If the movement is severe enough, it can also cause the ship to leak or even break apart. Gripe is a common problem for sailors and can be a sign of dangerous conditions at sea.
