Spiling

Spiling is a process of taking measurements of a ship's hull to create a template for the planks that will be used to repair or replace damaged sections. This involves taking measurements at regular intervals along the length and breadth of the ship, and recording these measurements on a spiling board. The spiling board is then used to create a pattern for the new planks, which can be cut to size and shape before being installed. Spiling is an important part of ship repair and maintenance, as it ensures that new planks fit perfectly and maintain the structural integrity of the ship.
