Gusset

In maritime context, a gusset is a triangular or diamond-shaped piece of material that is used to reinforce a joint or a corner. Gussets are commonly used in shipbuilding to strengthen the connections between the hull and the deck, or between the frames and the plating. They are also used in sails to reinforce the corners and prevent tearing. The shape and size of the gusset depend on the specific application and the loads that it needs to withstand. Gussets can be made of various materials, such as metal, wood, or fabric, and can be attached by welding, bolting, or sewing.
