Hawsehole
A hawsehole is a hole in the bow of a ship through which the anchor chain passes. It is usually lined with a metal pipe called a hawsepipe to protect the hull from damage. The hawsehole is an important part of the anchor system, as it allows the anchor chain to be deployed and retrieved. The size of the hawsehole is determined by the size of the anchor chain, and it must be large enough to allow the chain to pass through smoothly. The hawsehole is also used to secure the ship when it is moored or anchored. In rough seas, water can enter the hawsehole and cause damage to the ship, so it is important to have a good seal around the hawsepipe.
