Rudder

A rudder is a primary control surface used to steer a ship, boat, submarine, hovercraft, aircraft, or other conveyance that moves through a fluid medium (generally air or water). On a ship, a rudder is a flat piece or a vertical plate made of metal or composite material that is hinged at the stern and can be turned horizontally to control the direction of the vessel. The rudder is operated by a steering mechanism, which may be a tiller, a wheel, or a joystick. The size and shape of the rudder depend on the size and speed of the vessel, as well as the conditions in which it operates.
