Heave Short

Heave short is a nautical term used to describe the act of stopping a ship's forward motion by bringing it to a standstill through the use of anchor chains. This is done by dropping the anchor to the seabed and then hauling it back in until the ship is held in place. The term is also used to describe the act of bringing a ship to a temporary stop while waiting for a pilot or tugboat. Heave short is an important maneuver in maritime operations as it allows a ship to maintain its position in adverse weather conditions or in congested waters. It is also used during maintenance and repair work on the ship's engines or other equipment.
