Helmsman

A helmsman is a person who steers a ship, boat, or yacht. The helmsman is responsible for keeping the vessel on course, adjusting the steering to compensate for wind and current, and avoiding collisions with other vessels or obstacles. The helmsman must be able to read and interpret navigational instruments, such as compasses and charts, and communicate effectively with other members of the crew. In addition to steering the vessel, the helmsman may also be responsible for monitoring the engine, sails, and other systems to ensure that they are functioning properly.
