Horsepower
Horsepower is a unit of power used to measure the output of engines and motors. In maritime context, it is commonly used to measure the power of a ship's engine or propulsion system. One horsepower is equivalent to the power needed to lift 550 pounds one foot in one second, or to move 33,000 pounds one foot in one minute. The power of a ship's engine is important in determining its speed and maneuverability, as well as its ability to carry cargo or passengers. Horsepower can also be used to measure the power of auxiliary systems on board a ship, such as pumps or generators.
