Inert Gas System

An Inert Gas System (IGS) is a safety system used on board tankers to prevent the risk of fire or explosion in cargo tanks. The system works by replacing the air in the cargo tanks with inert gas, such as nitrogen or carbon dioxide, which reduces the oxygen concentration to below the level required for combustion. The IGS also helps to prevent cargo contamination by reducing the amount of oxygen in the cargo tanks. The system is typically composed of a flue gas system, which collects and cleans the exhaust gases from the ship's boilers, and a distribution system, which delivers the inert gas to the cargo tanks. The IGS is an essential safety feature on board tankers and is required by international regulations.
