Inert Gas System
An Inert Gas System (IGS) is a safety system used on board tankers to prevent the risk of fire or explosion in cargo tanks. The system works by replacing the air in the cargo tanks with inert gas, such as nitrogen or carbon dioxide, which reduces the oxygen concentration to below the level required for combustion.
