ISM Code

The International Safety Management (ISM) Code is a set of guidelines for the safe operation of ships and pollution prevention. It requires shipping companies to establish a safety management system (SMS) that includes policies, procedures, and instructions for safe operation and environmental protection. The SMS must be implemented and maintained on board the ship and ashore, and it must be audited and certified by a recognized organization. The ISM Code applies to all types of ships, including oil tankers, bulk carriers, passenger ships, and cargo ships, and it is mandatory for ships of 500 gross tonnage and above. The purpose of the ISM Code is to ensure that shipping companies and ships operate safely and prevent accidents, injuries, and pollution.
