Knot
In maritime context, a knot is a unit of speed equal to one nautical mile per hour. It is commonly used to measure the speed of a vessel in water. The term knot comes from the practice of using a rope with knots tied in it at uniform intervals to measure the speed of a ship. The rope was thrown overboard and the number of knots that passed through a sailor's hands in a given amount of time was used to calculate the ship's speed. Today, the speed of a vessel is measured using an instrument called a knotmeter or a GPS system. However, the term knot is still widely used in the maritime industry to refer to a vessel's speed.
