Knots

In maritime context, a knot is a unit of speed equal to one nautical mile per hour. It is commonly used to measure the speed of a vessel in water. The term knot comes from the practice of using a rope with knots tied in it to measure the speed of a ship. The rope was thrown overboard and the knots were allowed to pass through the sailor's hands while a sandglass was turned. The number of knots that passed through the sailor's hands in a given amount of time was used to calculate the ship's speed. Today, knots are measured using electronic devices such as GPS or radar. However, the term knot is still used to refer to a vessel's speed.
