Landing Ship Dock

A Landing Ship Dock (LSD) is a type of amphibious warfare ship designed to support amphibious operations by carrying and launching landing craft and vehicles, and providing support to the embarked landing force. LSDs are equipped with a well deck, a flooded compartment at the stern of the ship that can be opened to allow landing craft to enter and exit the ship while it is afloat. This allows the ship to transport and launch a variety of amphibious vehicles, including tanks, trucks, and personnel carriers. LSDs also have a flight deck for helicopters and other vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, and can provide medical and logistical support to the landing force.
