Log Line

A log line is a rope that is marked at regular intervals with knots or other markers, used to measure the speed of a vessel. The log line is attached to a log, which is thrown overboard and allowed to float behind the vessel. As the vessel moves forward, the log line is paid out, and the number of knots that pass through the sailor's hands in a given amount of time is used to calculate the vessel's speed. The log line is an important tool for navigation and is still used on some vessels today.
