Long-Range Identification And Tracking (LRIT)

Long-Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) is a global maritime security system approved by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for the identification and tracking of ships. It was established to enhance maritime domain awareness and improve maritime security. LRIT provides for the identification and tracking of ships beyond the range of traditional coastal surveillance systems, up to a distance of 1000 nautical miles from the coast. The system is designed to be operational at all times, irrespective of the ship's location. It allows Contracting Governments to track any ship, anywhere in the world, that is fitted with LRIT equipment. The system is mandatory for all passenger ships including high-speed craft, cargo ships, and mobile offshore drilling units, irrespective of their size. The LRIT system consists of the shipborne LRIT information transmitting equipment, the Communication Service Provider, the Application Service Provider, the LRIT Data Centre, including any related interfaces, and the LRIT shipborne equipment conformance test and test report.
