Pitting

Pitting is a form of localized corrosion that occurs on metal surfaces, particularly in the presence of chloride ions. It is characterized by the formation of small cavities or pits on the metal surface, which can rapidly penetrate into the material and cause structural damage. Pitting corrosion is a common problem in the maritime industry, particularly in seawater systems such as ballast tanks, piping, and heat exchangers. The severity of pitting corrosion depends on a number of factors, including the concentration of chloride ions, the temperature and pH of the environment, and the composition and surface finish of the metal. Effective prevention and control measures include the use of corrosion-resistant materials, protective coatings, and regular inspection and maintenance.
