Maritime Safety Treaty
A Maritime Safety Treaty refers to an international agreement or convention aimed at promoting safety in maritime operations and preventing accidents, pollution, and other hazards at sea. These treaties are often established under the auspices of international organizations such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO). They set out standards and regulations for various aspects of maritime safety, including ship design, construction, equipment, crewing, navigation, and operations. They also cover emergency response, search and rescue, and the handling of dangerous goods. Compliance with these treaties is mandatory for member states, and they are enforced through inspections, certifications, and penalties for non-compliance. The most well-known Maritime Safety Treaty is the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), which was first adopted in 1914 following the Titanic disaster and has been updated several times since.
