Navigational Status
In maritime context, Navigational Status refers to the current operational condition of a vessel in relation to its ability to navigate safely. It encompasses a range of factors including the functionality of navigational equipment, the vessel's position, course, and speed, the competence of the crew, and the prevailing environmental conditions. Navigational status is crucial for ensuring the safety of the vessel, its crew, and cargo, as well as for preventing maritime accidents. It is continuously monitored and updated by the ship's officers and communicated to other vessels and maritime authorities as required. The navigational status of a vessel can be 'underway', meaning it is not at anchor, made fast to the shore, or aground, 'not under command', indicating it is unable to maneuver due to exceptional circumstances, or 'restricted in ability to maneuver', among others. These terms are defined by the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs).
