Panama Canal

The Panama Canal is a man-made waterway that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It is approximately 50 miles long and is located in the Central American country of Panama. The canal was constructed to reduce the time for ships to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, eliminating the need for ships to navigate the treacherous Cape Horn route around the southernmost tip of South America. The canal uses a system of locks - compartments with entrance and exit gates - to lift ships up to an artificial lake, Lake Gatun, and then lower them back down to sea level on the other side. The Panama Canal is a critical conduit for international maritime trade, with over 14,000 vessels passing through it annually. It has had a significant impact on shipping patterns, global trade, and the economic development of Panama.
