Pintle

A pintle is a pin or bolt, usually made of metal, used as a pivot point in a ship's steering system. It is a part of the pintle and gudgeon arrangement, which is a type of hinge mechanism used to attach the rudder to the sternpost of a vessel. The pintle is the male part of the hinge, while the gudgeon is the female part. The pintle is inserted into the gudgeon, allowing the rudder to pivot back and forth for steering. Pintles are also used in other parts of a ship's rigging, such as attaching the boom to the mast.
