Plate Tectonics

Plate tectonics is a scientific theory that describes the large-scale motion of Earth's lithosphere. The lithosphere is divided into a number of plates that float on the underlying asthenosphere. These plates move and interact with one another at plate boundaries, which can result in the formation of new crust, the destruction of old crust, and the creation of geological features such as mountains, volcanoes, and oceanic trenches. Plate tectonics is responsible for the distribution of continents and oceans, and plays a critical role in the Earth's climate and the evolution of life. It is also a key factor in the formation and distribution of natural resources such as oil, gas, and minerals.
