Running Lights

Running lights are a set of lights that are required to be displayed on a vessel underway between sunset and sunrise and during periods of restricted visibility. These lights help other vessels determine the type, size, and direction of the vessel in order to avoid collisions. The running lights consist of a red light on the port (left) side, a green light on the starboard (right) side, and a white light on the stern (back) of the vessel. The red and green lights are visible from dead ahead to 112.5 degrees abaft the beam on their respective sides, while the white light is visible from dead astern to 67.5 degrees on either side of the vessel. The lights must be of a certain brightness and positioned at specific heights and angles to ensure maximum visibility.
