Sacrificial Anode

A sacrificial anode is a highly active metal that is attached to the hull of a ship or other marine structure to prevent corrosion. The anode corrodes instead of the metal hull, which prolongs the life of the hull. The anode must be replaced periodically as it corrodes over time. Sacrificial anodes are typically made of zinc, aluminum, or magnesium, and are chosen based on the type of water in which the vessel will operate. They are an important component of a ship's cathodic protection system, which is designed to prevent corrosion and extend the life of the vessel.
