Corrosion

Corrosion is the gradual destruction of materials, usually metals, by chemical reaction with their environment. In the maritime context, corrosion is a major concern due to the constant exposure of ships and offshore structures to saltwater and other corrosive agents. Corrosion can weaken the structural integrity of a vessel, leading to safety hazards and costly repairs. Prevention and control of corrosion in the maritime industry involves the use of protective coatings, cathodic protection systems, and regular maintenance and inspection. Failure to address corrosion can result in significant economic and environmental consequences.
