Search And Rescue Coordination
Search and Rescue Coordination (SAR Coordination) in a maritime context refers to the organized response to distress signals and emergency situations at sea. It involves the deployment and management of resources, such as vessels, aircraft, and personnel, to locate and assist individuals in distress. The coordination is typically carried out by a Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) or a Sub-Centre (MRSC) under the guidance of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The process begins with the detection of a distress signal, often via an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) or a distress call via radio communication. The MRCC or MRSC then assesses the situation, plans the response, and deploys the necessary resources. The coordination also involves communication with other vessels in the vicinity, national and international authorities, and the relatives of those involved. The ultimate goal of SAR Coordination is to minimize loss of life, injury, and property damage at sea.
