Distress Signal

A distress signal is a means of attracting attention of other vessels or aircraft in order to summon help in the event of an emergency. Distress signals are used to indicate that a ship, aircraft, or person is in distress and requires immediate assistance. The most common types of distress signals are visual signals such as flares, smoke signals, and flags, as well as audible signals such as horns, whistles, and sirens. Distress signals are regulated by international law and must be used only in emergency situations. Failure to use a distress signal when in distress can result in serious consequences.
