Shot

In maritime context, shot refers to a unit of length used to measure the anchor chain. One shot is equal to 15 fathoms or 90 feet (27.4 meters) in length. The length of the anchor chain is important for determining the amount of scope, or the ratio of the length of the chain to the depth of the water, needed to safely anchor a vessel. The amount of scope required varies depending on the conditions, such as the depth of the water, the strength of the wind and current, and the size of the vessel. Therefore, it is important for sailors to know the length of their anchor chain in shots to ensure the safety of their vessel and crew.
