Shroud

In maritime context, a shroud is a supporting rope or cable that runs from the mast to the sides of a ship to provide lateral support and prevent the mast from falling. Shrouds are an essential part of a ship's rigging and are typically made of steel wire or synthetic fiber. They are attached to the mast at various heights and angles, depending on the size and type of the vessel. The tension in the shrouds is adjusted by turnbuckles to ensure the mast remains upright and stable in all weather conditions. Without shrouds, a ship's mast would be unable to withstand the forces of wind and waves, and the vessel would be at risk of capsizing.
