Storm Surge
Storm surge is an abnormal rise of water generated by a storm, over and above the predicted astronomical tide. It is caused primarily by the high winds and low atmospheric pressure associated with a storm, and can reach heights well over 30 feet. Storm surges can cause significant flooding and damage to coastal areas, and are often the most dangerous and destructive aspect of a tropical cyclone. The extent of the storm surge depends on a variety of factors, including the intensity and size of the storm, the shape and orientation of the coastline, and the depth and slope of the ocean floor.
