Surveillance Systems

In the maritime context, surveillance systems refer to the integrated network of devices and technologies used to monitor, detect, and track maritime activities and phenomena. They include radar systems, Automatic Identification Systems (AIS), Long-Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) systems, and satellite-based surveillance technologies. Radar systems are used to detect and track vessels and other objects in the maritime environment, providing real-time information about their position, speed, and course. AIS is a tracking system used on ships and by vessel traffic services for identifying and locating vessels by electronically exchanging data with other nearby ships and AIS Base stations. LRIT provides global identification and tracking information of ships for security purposes. Satellite-based surveillance technologies provide a broader and more comprehensive view of maritime activities, enabling the detection and tracking of vessels over vast ocean areas. These systems collectively contribute to maritime domain awareness, facilitating the prevention and response to potential maritime threats and incidents, and enhancing the efficiency of maritime operations.
