Tacit Acceptance Procedure

In the maritime context, the Tacit Acceptance Procedure refers to a process used by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to expedite the adoption and implementation of amendments to international conventions. This procedure is designed to ensure that changes to maritime safety and environmental standards are implemented globally in a timely manner. Under the tacit acceptance procedure, amendments proposed by the IMO are deemed to have been accepted after a certain period unless objections are received from an agreed number of parties. This process bypasses the need for explicit approval from all parties, which can be time-consuming and delay the implementation of important safety and environmental measures. The tacit acceptance procedure is used for a number of key maritime conventions, including the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL).
