Territorial Waters
Territorial waters refer to the area of sea adjacent to a country's coast, over which the country has sovereignty, including the airspace above and the seabed below. The extent of a country's territorial waters is determined by international law and is usually set at 12 nautical miles from the baseline. Within this area, a country has the right to enforce its laws, including customs, immigration, and sanitation laws. Foreign ships passing through territorial waters must comply with the laws of the coastal state, including innocent passage, which means that they must not engage in any activities that threaten the peace, security, or environment of the coastal state. Territorial waters are an important concept in maritime law and are closely related to the concept of a country's exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
