Throat

In maritime context, throat refers to the narrowest part of a sail between the luff and the throat halyard. It is the upper corner of the sail where the luff and the head meet. The throat halyard is used to hoist the sail and control the tension of the luff. The angle between the throat and the luff is known as the throat angle. The throat angle is an important factor in determining the sail's shape and performance. A tight throat angle creates a flatter sail shape, which is better for upwind sailing, while a wider throat angle creates a fuller sail shape, which is better for downwind sailing.
