Halyard

A halyard is a line used to hoist a sail, flag, or yard on a sailing vessel. It is typically made of synthetic fibers or wire rope and is attached to the head of the sail or the top of the mast. The halyard runs through a block at the masthead and is then led back down to the deck where it can be tensioned and cleated off. The tension on the halyard is what allows the sail to catch the wind and propel the vessel forward. Halyards come in different sizes and strengths depending on the size and weight of the sail they are intended to hoist.
