Time Charters
In the maritime context, a Time Charter is a contract for the hire of a vessel for a specific period of time; the shipowner still manages the vessel but the charterer decides the ports and directs the vessel where to go. The charterer is responsible for providing the cargo and the shipowner continues to manage the vessel's operations, including providing the crew, maintaining the vessel, and providing necessary insurance. The charterer pays for all fuel, port charges, commissions, and a daily hire to the owner. The rate of hire is fixed for the agreed duration of the charter, which can be for a particular trip (trip charter) or a fixed period of time (period charter). The charterer may direct where the vessel goes, subject to the terms of the charter party (the contract between the owner and the charterer). Time Charters are a common form of charter agreement in commercial maritime operations, and they allow for flexibility in the type and destination of cargo.
