Tornadoes are violently rotating columns of air that extend from a thunderstorm to the surface of the earth. They are often referred to as twisters or cyclones, and can cause significant damage to ships and coastal infrastructure. Tornadoes at sea are known as waterspouts, and can be just as dangerous as their land-based counterparts. Waterspouts can form over warm ocean waters and move onto land, causing damage to coastal communities. They can also form over land and move out to sea, becoming weaker as they move further away from the shore. Tornadoes are typically classified on the Enhanced Fujita Scale based on their wind speed and the damage they cause.
