Transceiver
In the maritime context, a transceiver refers to a device that has both a transmitter and a receiver which are combined and share common circuitry or a single housing. When no circuitry is shared between transmit and receive functions, the device is a transmitter-receiver. The term originated in the early 1920s. Technically, transceivers must combine a significant amount of the transmitter and receiver handling circuitry. In the maritime industry, transceivers are used in various communication and navigation systems, such as the Automatic Identification System (AIS). AIS is a tracking system used on ships and by vessel traffic services for identifying and locating vessels by electronically exchanging data with other nearby ships, AIS base stations, and satellites. The data provides information such as a vessel's identity, type, position, course, speed, navigational status and other safety-related information. The transceiver sends and receives this data over a specific frequency, allowing for real-time tracking and communication.
