Treenails

Treenails, also known as trunnels, are wooden pegs used in traditional wooden shipbuilding to fasten planks to frames and other structural members. Treenails are made from hardwoods such as oak or locust, and are typically tapered at both ends. They are driven through pre-drilled holes in the planks and frames, and then trimmed flush with the surface. Treenails are an important part of traditional shipbuilding techniques, as they provide a strong and flexible connection that allows the wooden hull to move and flex with the sea. They are also used in restoration work on historic ships, as they provide an authentic and durable repair method.
