Trim

Trim refers to the balance of a ship in the water, which is achieved by adjusting the distribution of weight on board. A ship is said to be trimmed when it is floating evenly in the water, with neither the bow nor the stern dipping too deeply. Proper trim is important for a ship's stability, speed, and fuel efficiency. Trim can be adjusted by shifting cargo or ballast, or by adjusting the draft of the ship. A ship with a negative trim is said to be 'down by the head', while a ship with a positive trim is 'down by the stern'.
