Visibility
Visibility refers to the distance at which an object or a light can be seen and identified by an observer. In maritime context, visibility is an important factor for navigation and safety at sea. Poor visibility due to fog, mist, rain, snow, or darkness can increase the risk of collision, grounding, or other accidents. The International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs) define different levels of visibility and require vessels to take appropriate actions such as sounding fog signals, reducing speed, or altering course to avoid collisions. The use of navigation aids such as radar, GPS, and AIS can also improve visibility and situational awareness for mariners.
