Yard

In maritime and seamanship context, a yard is a horizontal spar, made of wood or metal, that is attached to a mast and used to support and manipulate sails. Yards are classified based on their position on the mast and their function. The lowest yard on a square-rigged ship is called the lower yard, followed by the topsail yard and the topgallant yard. Yards can also be used to support and manipulate other equipment, such as lights, signals, and antennas. The size and shape of a yard depend on the size of the ship and the sails it carries. Proper handling of yards is essential for safe and efficient sailing.
