BeiDou

BeiDou is a satellite navigation system developed and operated by China, designed to provide global positioning, navigation, and timing services. It is named after the Chinese term for the Big Dipper constellation. BeiDou is part of the four global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), alongside GPS (United States), GLONASS (Russia), and Galileo (Europe). In the maritime context, BeiDou plays a crucial role in enhancing the safety and efficiency of marine operations. It provides accurate and reliable positioning and navigation information, which is vital for route planning, ship control, and collision avoidance. BeiDou also supports the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), an internationally agreed-upon set of safety procedures, types of equipment, and communication protocols used to increase safety and make it easier to rescue distressed ships, boats and aircraft. Furthermore, BeiDou's short message communication service capability can be used for maritime communication, especially in areas where terrestrial communication networks are not available.
