Catalyst

In maritime context, a catalyst is a substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without itself undergoing any permanent chemical change. Catalysts are used in various maritime applications such as in the production of fuels, lubricants, and other chemicals. They are also used in the treatment of exhaust gases from ships to reduce harmful emissions. Catalysts can be either homogeneous or heterogeneous, and they work by providing an alternative pathway for the reaction to occur with lower activation energy. This results in a faster reaction rate and increased efficiency in the process.
