Compartmentalize

Compartmentalize refers to the practice of dividing a ship's hull into separate watertight compartments to prevent flooding and maintain buoyancy in the event of damage or flooding. This is a critical safety measure in maritime engineering and design, as it allows a ship to remain afloat and stable even if one or more compartments are breached. Compartmentalization is achieved through the use of bulkheads, which are walls or partitions that separate different areas of the ship. These bulkheads are designed to be watertight and are reinforced to withstand the pressure of water in the event of a breach. The practice of compartmentalization has been used in shipbuilding for centuries and is a fundamental principle of naval architecture.
