Double-Hulled Construction
Double-Hulled Construction refers to a shipbuilding method where the vessel's hull is constructed with two complete layers of watertight hull surface: one outer layer forming the normal hull of the ship, and a second inner hull which is somewhat smaller. The space between the two hulls is often used for storage of fuel or ballast water. This design significantly improves the vessel's resistance to damage and subsequent oil spills, particularly in the event of grounding or collision. Double-hulled construction is now a standard design aspect in oil tankers and other large vessels due to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) regulations. These regulations were introduced following a number of disastrous oil spills from single-hulled vessels, and they mandate the use of double-hulled construction for all new oil tankers. The double-hulled design also provides an added layer of protection against corrosion, as the outer hull can be coated with anti-corrosive paint while the inner hull remains protected.
