Energy-Efficient Design

In the maritime context, Energy-Efficient Design refers to the application of strategies and technologies in the design of ships and maritime structures to reduce their energy consumption and environmental impact. This includes the use of advanced materials, innovative hull designs, and energy-efficient propulsion systems. The goal is to improve fuel efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and minimize the environmental footprint of maritime operations. Energy-efficient design can also contribute to operational efficiency and cost savings, as less energy consumption translates into lower fuel costs. This concept is increasingly important in the context of international regulations aimed at reducing the environmental impact of shipping, such as the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) developed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The EEDI requires new ships to meet minimum energy efficiency levels, encouraging the adoption of energy-efficient design practices in the maritime industry.
