Half-mast

Half-mast is a term used in maritime context to describe the position of a ship's flag when it is flown at a position halfway between the top of the mast and the bottom of the mast. This is done as a sign of respect or mourning, such as when a ship's crew member or a prominent figure in the maritime community has passed away. The flag is lowered to half-mast by first raising it to the top of the mast and then lowering it to the halfway point. It is important to note that the term 'half-staff' is used on land, while 'half-mast' is used at sea.
