Halyards

Halyards are ropes or lines used to hoist or lower sails, flags, or other objects on a ship. They are typically made of synthetic fibers or natural materials such as hemp or cotton. Halyards are an essential part of a ship's rigging and are used to control the height and angle of sails, as well as to secure flags and other objects to the mast or yardarm. The tension on a halyard is adjusted using a device called a cleat, which allows the line to be locked in place. Halyards are often named according to the sail or object they control, such as the mainsail halyard or the flag halyard.
